The Western New York Flash announced today that goalkeeper Lydia Williams will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2014 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscal tear in her left knee in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Washington Spirit.

“We are of course devastated that this happened to Lydia, especially after she has really come into her own and done so well for the club in the last month,” Flash general manager and coach Aaran Lines said. “We wish her a healthy and timely return before next summer’s World Cup. We’ll miss her both on and off the field.”

Just 11 minutes into Saturday’s game, Williams leaped to pull a corner kick from the air and came down awkwardly on the turf.  The goalkeeper was replaced by rookie backup Kelsey Wys for the remainder of the contest.

“I’m devastated by the way this injury happened, especially since our play was beginning to pick up and we were making the run for the playoffs,” Williams said. “Now, though, the bigger picture is the World Cup; getting home and getting myself better for that. Obviously, it really hurts me that I have to leave the Flash this way and this soon.”

This is the second ACL injury for Williams, a goalkeeper for both Canberra United of the W-League and the Australia Women’s National Team. She previously tore the ACL in the same knee in 2012 while playing for the Swedish club Pitea IF.

Williams, who held both American and Australian citizenship, marks the second Flash keeper to see her season end on an ACL injury. In just the first day of preseason training, second-year netminder Adrianna Franch tore the ACL in her right knee, leading the Flash to bring Williams on board.
