The Western New York Flash announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Chantel Jones. Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“We’re excited to be welcoming Chantel, who brings a bit of experience in the NWSL and is continuing to improve through her international experience in Australia’s W-League,” Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines said. “She’s a goalkeeper that is going to be here the entire 2015 season and I see a lot of similarities to [AD] Franch. Fans should be very excited to have Chantel as part of the Western New York Flash.”
The Flash acquired the rights to Jones, 26, in a trade with the Washington Spirit on Nov. 13, 2014. A native of Midlothian, Va., Jones started her NWSL career in 2013 after being signed as a discovery player by the Spirit. In her two seasons in D.C., Jones made nine starts and earned her first professional win on Aug. 7, 2013 in a 1-0 shutout over the Chicago Red Stars.
As a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team program, Jones appeared with the U-20 U.S. Women’s National Team at both the 2007 Pan American Games and 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
A four-year starter at the University of Virginia, she set many of the program’s goalkeeping records including single-season shutouts (14) and career goals against average (0.65). Jones also holds the Virginia record for most career shutouts (47).
Jones, who is currently playing with Canberra United of the Westfield W-League, will join the Flash prior to the start of the 2015 NWSL season. This past weekend, the team secured the third seed in the league and will face second-seeded Melbourne Victory on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time (Friday at 11 p.m. ET) in the league semifinals.
