Cutrona, Pezzino Each Log First UWS Goal

BUFFALO, NY (May 21, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash (0-1-2) were looking to get back on track after last weekend’s loss at the hands of the New York Surf (1-0-1), and they were able to use two second-half goals to come away with a 2-2 draw.

The match got off to a slow start, with the Surf controlling the early-goings of the match before Marcy Barberic started to create a couple of chances, including a dangerous cross towards the goal in the 34’ that hit off of the outside of the post and went over the back line.

The Surf were able to capitalize in the 43’ when a bending free kick found Meagen Doyle, who was able to put it past goalkeeper Meg Tock. The Surf entered the break with a one-goal lead.

The second half started just like the first, with not a whole lot of action. The Surf doubled their lead in the 57’ when Doyle snuck behind the defense and fed a ball to Fortuna Velaj to give the visiting side a two-goal lead.

The Flash quickly turned on the jets, and Maddie Pezzino was able to find Carissima Cutrona just minutes later for the home side’s first goal of the match in the 61’.

Chances went back and forth for each side in the latter part of the second half before Pezzino found the back of the net on a dramatic 87’ equalizer. Canisius product Margretta Dry was credited with the assist.

The match came to a close with each team being credited with two goals. Tock logged a season-high nine saves for the Flash in net.

“We responded with some good energy to tie the game up and it was really, really nice to see some of the hometown girls to play well in front of their family and friends,” Head Coach Gary Bruce said. “We are getting better, but so are the teams that we are playing against. It will be important for us to keep improving over the next couple weeks.”

The Flash will return to UWS action on June 3 as they host the Long Island Rough Riders at Niagara University. The match will kick off at 7:00 ET and fans can purchase tickets here.
