Team Hosts Doubleheader Next Weekend

LEWISTON, NY (June 3, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash (0-2-2) were looking to finally get in the win column against the Long Island Rough Riders (2-0-1), but were shut out by the visitors in a 7-0 losing effort at Niagara University.

The evening match got off to a quick start, with Long Island taking an early lead in the 5’ as Madison Vasquez scored the opening goal on a breakaway. Meghan Santoro followed that up with a goal of her own in the 15’ to give the Rough Riders a multi-goal lead. The Flash were then able to play some stout defense for over twenty minutes, until Francesca Venezia added another two tallies for the visiting team in the latter stages of the first half.

Coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Flash were unable to gain momentum as Erin Neville completed the hat trick on back-to-back-to-back Rough Rider goals, with the second coming off a free kick, to put Long Island out in front 7-0. Rough Riders were able to hold their seven goal lead for the final six minutes of the game, earning their 2nd win on the season and handing the Flash their second loss in 2017.

Meg Tock started in goal for the Flash, making several big saves despite the Rough Riders totaling 22 shots over 90 minutes. Western New York also generated some scoring chances of their own on 7 shots, but the Long Island goalkeeper was able to earn the shutout. Both teams finished the game with 9 fouls apiece, while the Flash held the 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

“The situation that we are a part of this summer is by choice,” Head Coach Gary Bruce explained. “Our work rate and our effort needs to be better as we prepare for next weekend, and it needs to show when we take the field next weekend.”

The Flash will return to UWS action next weekend as they host the New England Mutiny on Saturday, June 10, and the New Jersey Copa FC on Sunday, June 11. Both matches will be played at Dwyer Stadium on the Niagara University campus. The match on Saturday will kick off at 7:00 ET, while the match on Sunday will kick off at 3:00 ET, and fans can purchase tickets to both matches here.
